Who Can Ride a Scooter? Our Rider Requirements

Safety is very important to us: All guests must be age 16 or older and weight no more than 290 lbs. (131 kilos).  Under age 18 must tour with parent or guardian. (Age requirement is current CA state law)

Scooter riding is not recommended for pregnant women. Unfortunately, pregnant guests will not be permitted to participate due to fall risk.

NOTE: If you have never ridden a bike this may not be the activity for you. Riding a scooter requires side to side balance similar to riding a bike. IMPORTANT: Due to time limits we CANNOT provide riders with no previous bike riding experience with  full training on riding and most importantly balancing on a scooter.
The equipment recap and skills overview session provides riders with a quick overview of the scooter controls, knowledge, and experience needed to safely operate the Scooters. You will  be guided through a low speed ride and an emergency stop to ensure a safe, enjoyable experience.

An electric scooter is not an ideal mode of touring for people with some mobility issues. All guests must be able to easily and quickly step on and off the scooter platform without any assistance, which requires physical abilities similar to climbing and descending stairs without assistance or use of a handrail.

On some hills the scooter will require a bit of “kick” to maintain momentum. The electric motors are helpful on the hills but are not strong enough to propel heavier guests up some slopes. Be prepared to kick.

If you book a tour and any of your guests do not meet the minimum age / weight criteria they will not be allowed on the tour and you will not be given a refund or rescheduled.

Due to fall risk this activity is NOT recommended for some guests age 70 and up or guests with recent surgery, mobility/ motor control issues and other disabilities. Please call to discuss prior to booking.

Be able to stand on the Scooter for a period of 1-2 hours.

Wear the helmet and safety vest that is provided with the tour.

Review and sign a liability waiver.

Respect road signs, pedestrians, bikes and cars for a safe enjoyable ride.

Complete the scooter rider recap.

Respect road signs, pedestrians, bikes and cars for a safe enjoyable ride. Arrive 15 minutes early to check in and be ready for fun!

What model/type of Electric Scooters do you use?

We use 2 models of Electric Scooters:

We operate tours on two of the top end scooter models available. No matter the design/motor size on some hills the scooter will require a bit of “kick” to maintain momentum. The electric motors are helpful on the hills but are not strong enough to propel heavier guests up some slopes. Be prepared to kick.

Are Tours Cancelled Due to Weather?

San Francisco is famous for the fog and chilly summer days!
Our tours DO operate in fog, light rain and on windy chilly days.
We always suggest multiple layers of warm clothing for San Francisco outdoor actives.

Summer afternoons can be in the 50’s.
We have rain gear, warm jackets and gloves for those infrequent rainy days or chilly afternoons.

Scooters are designed to run in any weather.

Weather reschedules or refunds: In the rare case we cancel due to a severe rain we will offer space on an alternate date or time (if space is available.) or a full refund.

We generally wait until one hour prior to the tour departure time for most rain cancels. Rain along the California coast is very fickle and we end up operating almost every tour on rainy days.

Helpful Hint: Please make sure we have a good phone number to reach you if the weather forecast calls for rain.

There is no storage on the scooters. Small backpacks are OK. Please leave bulky backpacks at home.

What Days Are You Open?

We are open seven days a week. If you plan to be in the Bay Area during 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Fleet Week (Early October) or other Holidays please call for schedule changes. We are closed January 1 and December 25th.

Please check each tour page for current tour times:

Important: For our regularly scheduled public tours: Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time to check in and start your tour and training on time.

If you arrive late we will NOT let you join a tour group that has already started training and your money will not be refunded or your tour rescheduled.
Safety and complete training for all of our guests is our 1st priority – we will not rush training to accommodate late arriving guests.

How do I learn to ride a Electric Scooter?

How do I learn to ride an Electric Scooter?
The tour time includes a very brief recap/training session on the scooters we use on the tours.  Previous bicycle riding experience is highly suggested. NOTE: If you have never ridden a bike this may not be the activity for you. Riding a scooter requires side to side balance similar to riding a bike. The equipment recap and skills overview session provides riders with a quick overview of the scooter controls, knowledge, and experience needed to safely operate the Scooters. You will  be guided through a low speed ride and an emergency stop to ensure a safe, enjoyable experience.

IMPORTANT: Due to time limits we CANNOT provide riders with no previous bike riding experience with  full training on riding and balancing on a scooter.

NOTE: On some hills the scooter will require a bit of “kick” to maintain momentum. The electric motors are helpful on the hills but are not strong enough to propel heavier guests up some slopes. Be prepared to kick.

Training time is part of the overall tour time. During the busy summer season training time may be slightly longer. Riders are trained on safe scooter operation, emergency stops and our “Share the Road” policy.  Training time varies with group size and skill level. We reserve the right to change the size or routing of the tour due to weather, city events, festivals, construction and street closure, etc.

All riders are required to wear a helmet and bright colored reflective safety vest.

How long, fast and far can I ride?

The San Francisco Scooter Tour has a top speed of about 15 miles per hour. Our Scooters can average about 20 miles between battery charges. A fully charged battery will last with constant riding for approximately 4 hours. Riding times vary with hills, rider weight and speed.

Our Scooters have settings that limit the top speed. Your tour will be cruising at between 5-12 miles per hour. With crowded streets we limit our speed for a relaxed cruise.

What Should I Wear?

What Should I Wear ?

It is cold in San Francisco ! Dress comfortable and in layers.

Highly recommended: Comfortable closed toe flat shoes (no high heels, sandals, shape ups, z-coils or flip flops) and an extra layer of warm, wind resistant clothing.
Gloves are recommended during the winter months.
With the chilly wind, wet fog and damp environment along the waterfront and in the park shorts and a t-shirt are NOT a good fashion idea.

Each Segway has a very small handlebar storage bag for cameras, light jackets and purses.
Backpacks or bulky bags will not fit in the handlebar bags. Please leave bulky backpacks at home.

We have a supply of rain ponchos, warm jackets and lightweight knit gloves at the San Francisco location.
Simple knit caps (beanies) are available for purchase for $2.00 if you want something to wear under the helmet.
Guests may bring their own bike helmets.

Are guide gratuities included in the tour price?

Are guide gratuities included in the tour or team building price?
For our regularly scheduled public tours: With our guests from around the world we get asked about guide gratuities every day. Guide gratuities are not included in the tour price. We do not include a fixed price gratuity as we want to keep the tours affordable for as many guests as possible. Guide gratuities are completely at the discretion of the guest. We employ a great and diverse group of guides. They guide because it is a fun job and they get to meet people from all corners of the world. Similar to service businesses all over the United States, gratuities are a small part of the compensation the staff receives. If you choose to give your guide a gratuity, it would be much appreciated.
For our private group tours and scavenger hunts: Gratuities are included as part of the pre-paid cost for our private group tours team building and corporate events.

Security Deposit and Damages?

Security Deposit and Damages?

All Tour and Event reservations require prepayment with a credit card. We Accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express.

We do not charge a security deposit on your credit card. Your card will be charged for any damages to the Scooter.

Riders are responsible for all damages to the Scooter and/or anything they may accidentally collide with.

Example: If you accidentally dent a car along the route you will be responsible to work out paying for damages directly with vehicle owner. Note this is very very rare problem and we will help facilitate the communication between parties.

Please keep in mind that our scooters are top of the line units and are $1000.00 1200.00 each.

What About Restrooms?

What About Restrooms?

We apologize for not having public restrooms at our main Fisherman’s Wharf 757 Beach Street training facility. (It is a parking lot)

Can Private Tours be Customized?

Can Private Tours be Customized?

Yes we can make changes in routes, stop longer at a special spot or adjust the route to the guest riding ability.  Let us know what you want to see and do.

There are parts of downtown San Francisco that are too congested for a relaxed tour experience and we suggest not touring in that area. National Parks are off limits to Segways.

Do your tours go across or to the Golden Gate Bridge?

DO YOUR TOURS GO ACROSS OR TO THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE?

This is a popular request and the answer is unfortunately no – Electric Scooter riding is not allowed on the Bridge.  Electric Scooters for safety reasons are not allowed on the bridge sidewalks. We can park the scooters near the bridge sidewalk entrance and walk out.

We do get amazing views of the Bridge, Fort Point, Bridge Overlook and San Francisco Bay from our scooter tour routes.

How many riders go with a tour guide?

How many riders go with a tour guide?

  • Wharf activities & tours between 8 to 10 guests per guide. In Golden Gate park maximum 8 guests per tour guide.
  • All guests are issues a small radio receiver with a single earbud. The guide narrates and points out the route as the tour moves through the city.

Do You Provide Any Options For Lunches or Snacks?

DO YOU PROVIDE ANY OPTIONS FOR LUNCHES OR SNACKS?
  • For groups over 10 guest we can arrange for anything from a light snack to a picnic lunch.
  • For smaller groups it is often easier to make a stop along the tour route for a quick snack.

Can we start or end at a remote location ?

CAN WE START OR END AT A REMOTE LOCATION?
  • Yes we can arrange that. The location needs to be a destination that we can reach on easily navigated routes in a reasonable time. We have ended group tours at restaurants, museums and other landmarks.
  • Additional fee for staff to retrieve the Scooters will be charged.

Do you offer shorter time Private tours?

Do you offer shorter time Private tours?

We can shorten the time slightly for Private Tours. We don’t recommend making a private tour event less that 1.5 to 2 hours. The training takes between 10-15 minutes and for guest safety cannot be shortened.  Larger groups (over 25 guests) can take a bit longer to train and we do want you to see some of the city too!

Please ask our team building experts what will work with your available time.

SCAVENGER HUNTS - HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN GO?

Scavenger Hunts are a minimum of 9 and a maximum of 36 guests per departure time. Groups are split into teams: 2 teams of 5 up to 3 teams of 12 each.

Larger Scavenger Hunt groups may be split between our 2 wharf locations to facilitate training everyone in the shortest time. The Wharf locations are 2 1/2 blocks apart.

We can do groups larger than 36 with staggered departure times. Generally the additional groups depart 45 minutes after the 1st group complete rider training and leaves start location.

CAN THE SCAVENGER HUNT BE CUSTOMIZED ?

Scavenger Hunt Activity Options:

Custom scrips or clues built around a company or group identity
Ending at a remote location.
Box Lunches, meals and picnics.
Ending at a local restaurant or event destination.
Prizes for Scavenger Hunt winners.

SCAVENGER HUNTS - HOW LONG ? MINIMUM & MAXIMUM TIME

Our Scooter Scavenger Hunts are 2.75 to 3 hours long, including rider recap before departure.

The minimum time is 2 hours as the rider training portion is approx 10-15 minutes.
